It's a tough question, complicated by the larger question in which it's embedded: Must we give up our way of life? The fabric of life in many differing socities is woven with roads, mobility, ease of transport.

Petrol fueled engines have made all of this possible, but they're also partly responsible for pollutants that foul the air we breathe and now, we learn, for global warming. The larger question includes other factors such as deforestation, coal fired energy plants, oil refineries and other manufacturing, population growth and consumer driven economies.

Some changes must be made in how we live. We can make them or nature will. Most people, even those who call global warming a hoax, recognize this. The real question behind various postures taken is: Whose life must change, and how? Biofuels are not a realistic alternative. They are a Shell game, an Exxon herring.

Even if they achieve carbon neutrality, they do not result in a reduction of CO2, and they take land out of crop production now increasingly needed as population continues to grow. Hydrogen fuel is more realistic, both for cars and for generation of energy. (Where is the Manhatten Project for hydrogen fusion?) Electric cars already exist and can effectively compete with petrol fueled cars in every way, given that we design better batteries and solar cells. (Where is the technomagic when we need it?)

The solution is simple and inexpensive. We must electrify our transit. We need to move freight by electric locomotives, and we need to move people in electric vehicles. As we make that switch, all increases in electrical demand must be met with renewable wind and solar energy. The federal government must lead through example and mandate that 95% of all new postal and congressional vehicles purchased after 2010 must be battery electric vehicles.

Sensex hits 20,000

After a three-day hiatus, FIIs became net buyers on Monday at Rs 688 crore.

The Sensex surged above 20,000 for the first time on Monday in tune with other Asian markets, as traders priced in another rate cut by the US Federal Reserve this week.

Expectations of a status quo in the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy stance also contributed to the rally, which saw the index ending up 3.82 per cent, or 734.50 points, at 19,977.97, just off a high of 20,024.87 hit in late trade.

After a three-day hiatus, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) became net buyers on Monday at Rs 688 crore. The fact that there is no pressure on them to unwind their holdings through participatory notes was the buying trigger on Monday.

Analysts said the new Sebi norms on issuance of P-notes had been quite accommodative. As most P-notes linked to equities and issued by sub-accounts will be regularised as soon as they register as FIIs, foreign investors are under no pressure to unwind them even after 18 months.

The index has now risen 27.5 per cent since the US rate cut and almost 43 per cent — or almost 6,000 points — since its weakest close during the subprime crisis in August. The record-setting run has been driven by foreign funds, which have bought a net $17 billion of shares this year up to Friday.

The broader 50-share NSE index rose 3.57 per cent to 5,905.90 points, after hitting a record high of 5,922.50 during trade. In the broader market 1,551 gainers led 1,186 losers in a total volume of 470 million shares.

“Healthy Q2 earnings and continued liquidity are helping the indices to new highs. Most of the overseas funds are coming into highly liquid large-cap stocks,” said Motilal Oswal, chairman of Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, a leading brokerage and financial services company.

“No doubt, we are in euphoric territory. But, if our infrastructure story clicks, the current valuations are justified,” said Ashith Kampani, director, JM Financial Group. “Corporate earnings numbers have also met expectations,” he added.

Shares in Reliance Industries, the biggest stock in the index, rose 5 per cent to Rs 2,827, propelling the company’s market capitalisation to $104.2 billion. The market capitalisation of the Indian stock market is now $1.58 trillion, or Rs 62.39 trillion (Rs 1 trillion = Rs 1 lakh crore), after investor wealth swelled by Rs 1,76,492 crore on Monday.

The Sensex, trading at a price-to-earnings multiple of 26.32 times, appears still at reasonable levels compared to China’s 50-plus levels, according to experts. But valuations are stretched compared to the price-to-earnings multiple of 18.52 times when the index crossed the 10,000-mark on February 6, 2006.

Hybrids versus Electric Cars

According to the Wall Street Journal, Honda, Nissan, and Renault are making the same arguments against hybrid vehicles that General Motors made several years ago to predict that hybrids would fail. (See “Hybrid or Electric: Car Makers Take Sides” and “Honda Won’t Pursue Plug-in Hybrids.”) The difference now is that the arguments are right this time—at least for some markets.

In the 1990s, U.S. automakers such as GM led the development of hybrid-vehicle technology. But GM elected to drop hybrids in favor of a much longer-term technology—hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles—arguing that hybrids were too expensive and didn’t provide enough environmental benefit to be successful. Then Toyota’s Prius proved GM wrong. And recently, GM has become a big promoter of hybrid technology, especially next-generation plug-in hybrids.

Not so Honda, Nissan, and Renault. According to the Journal report, Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of Renault and Nissan, complains that hybrids don’t really do much to reduce petroleum consumption and pollution, arguing that it’s better to build all-electric vehicles that have zero emissions. U.S. automakers such as GM made the same arguments, although they pushed for fuel-cell vehicles, not battery-powered vehicles. (GM, of course, already had a battery-electric vehicle, the EV1, which it scrapped.)

Honda currently sells hybrid vehicles, but the company’s president and CEO, Takeo Fukui, is skeptical of next-generation plug-in hybrids. Such cars would still have both electric motors and a gasoline engine, but they could go much farther on electricity alone than today’s hybrids can. GM has been touting its Volt concept, which would go 40 miles on electricity stored in lithium-ion batteries. For longer trips, a gas generator would kick on to recharge the battery, providing an additional 600 miles of range. Fukui’s argument is that the gas engine in the Volt is unnecessary. Presumably, he is suggesting that it would be better, and cheaper, to use batteries alone, or to stick with gasoline.

Intel versus AMD, who are you betting on?

When working on a computer, all of what you are doing is processed by the CPU (central processing unit), the brain of the computer if you will. Like brains, computers aren’t all of equal power. Some are the equivalent to a rat brain, and some to Einstein. The trick is to find that sweat spot between value and performance, that’s when you’ve found the perfect processor for you! But, before you decide how much power you want to jam in that little chip, you’re going to want to decide on the type. This my friend, is where we enter a feud that has lasted longer than life itself (well, at least for people that are younger than it!), the Intel versus AMD feud.

From the early 80's when the company Intel was founded, (by the way, Intel isn’t derived from the word intelligence, it’s a mix between the words integrated electronics) Intel has taken off and dominated the home computer market. It also took over the laptop processor market, and just recently with the introduction of there first 64 bit processor, very might well take over the server and workstation market (previously occupied by Sun’s UltraSparc and Compaq’s Alpha). But, all along the road to fame Intel has run into some competition. In the beginning, from IBM (the creator of the desktop), then Cyrix (which is almost totally wiped out), and most recently AMD. You might think that AMD will have the same fate as the rest, but the fact is that AMD is putting up a huge fight and is actually taking away Intel’s market share in almost all markets.

Now that I’ve given Intel’s background, AMD deserves some of the spotlight. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) doesn’t have such a long and prestigious history, but has done some pretty amazing things. No one knew about AMD before they introduced there first hit product, the AMD K6-2. It was designed to compete against the Pentium Pro, Pentium II, and earlier Pentium III’s. They then introduced the AMD K6-III, which wasn’t as popular and didn’t stick around long due to the introduction of the AMD Athlon and Duron processors. The Duron was designed to compete against the Celeron, it was designed as a consumer budget model. The Athlon was more advanced and was designed to compete against the Pentium III. They then redid the Athlon and came out with a Socket model (uses a small chip with pins on the bottom compared to the slot which was about the size of a graphing calculator and went in thin side down). This was designed to compete against the later Pentium III models and the Pentium 4.

Now that you know some background information on the two companies, it’s time to start the debate between the Intel processors and the AMD processors. The first fight is between the two consumer budget chips from both models, the Celeron from Intel and the Duron from AMD. The next fight is the desktop round between the Pentium III and Pentium 4 from Intel and the Athlon from AMD. The next is the high-end workstation and server markets, in which the Itanium from Intel and the SMP version of the Athlon from AMD. The last battle is for the notebook market. This includes the Pentium III with SpeedStep technology from Intel and the Athlon 4 from AMD.

Round One, Consumer Budget Processors

This fight is between the two entry level processors, Intel’s Celeron and AMD’s Duron. Both of the processors don’t perform as well as there desktop counterparts, especially the Celeron. The Celeron is about 200 megahertz slower than the Duron or AMD equivalent, although the technical clock speed may be the same. In this one, the Duron wins hands down. It’s cheaper, faster, and fits in the Athlon socket, so if you built a system designed for a Duron you could easily upgrade to an Athlon, no converters or change of motherboard required!

Round Two, Desktop Processors

This is really where Intel and AMD fight because here energy is not an issue and the speeds aren’t limited by cooling or space. The Intel Pentium III processor goes from 400 megahertz to 1 gigahertz. It performs similar to the Pentium 4, but is cheaper (although not as cheap as the high end Athlon’s). The Athlon is meant to compete on all fronts. It goes from 550 megahertz to 1.67 gigahertz (and climbing). It usually performs at about the same speed as an Intel processor 400 megahertz ahead (for example, a 1.4 GH-z Athlon will beet out a 1.8 GH-z Pentium 4). They are also really cheap, with the 1.4 GH-z processor going for $100. The last processor is the Pentium 4. This is aimed at the higher level consumer, but when sold with a desktop isn’t much more expensive. Overall, I’d say go for the Athlon because it’s cheaper, faster, and doesn’t use Rambus RAM (the P4 only uses Rambus RAM, the Athlon can use SDRAM or DDR RAM) unless you’re a gamer, then I’d say go for an Intel Pentium 4 based system at 1.5 GH-z.

Round Three, High-end Workstations and Servers

For a market where neither Intel nor AMD has ever been too successful, there is an awful lot of competition. AMD competes with it’s SMP based systems (Symmetrical Multi-Processor, more than one processor) and Intel competes with its 64 bit Itanium processor. The first half of the fight is centered around high-end workstations. These are usually involved with CAD and CAM programs which just suck up megahertz like there’s no tomorrow. On this front, the SMP Athlon systems win out. They are much cheaper than the Itanium chips and don’t need a 64 bit operating system to perform to their full potential. The server market is different. It doesn’t really have much activity directly onto it, but much serve up a lot of information to a large number of clients. This fight is won by the Intel Itanium. People are willing to pay more for speed when dealing with web servers, and the operating system really isn’t that important because only the clients are going to interact with it and they won’t need to navigate around the OS and there aren’t any compatibility issues like there are with programs like AutoCAD.

Round Four, Mobile Processors

In one corner, weighing in at up to 1.1 Gigahertz, the Intel Pentium III with SpeedStep. In the other corner, the latest mobile processor from AMD, weighing in at up to 1 Gigahertz, the AMD Athlon 4! Alright, first things first, what sets these chips apart from there desktop counterparts. The SpeedStep technology that Intel talks about in the naming scheme is why it’s a mobile processor. SpeedStep enabled chips are designed to save power by running at one speed when plugged in and another when relying on battery power. For example, in my Dell Inspiron 8000 with an Intel Pentium III 900 MH-z SpeedStep enabled processor runs at 900 megahertz when plugged in and 750 when relying on batter power. This can be disabled though, at the BIOS screen. The Athlon 4 (note that the 4 is just meant to compete with the Pentium 4, it’s basically the same as the normal Athlon) is just basically an energy saver. At the end of the match, I’d have to say that the AMD Athlon 4 processor would win because it doesn’t slow down the processor and is much cheaper (as are most AMD products).

All of this having been said, there are other choices out there. The main alternative is the Motorola PowerPC G4 or G3 that is in all Apple computers. I didn’t go into this here, because if you want a PowerPC system then you really only have two choices, iMac or G4 desktop. In the server/high-end workstation market there is the Alpha by Compaq (a 64 bit processor, although Compaq’s given up on this in favor of the Itanium) or the UltraSparc by Sun Microsystems. Also, in the notebook field there is the Transmeta Crusoe which consumes very little power. I just wanted to point this out before the Apple, Alpha, UltraSparc, and Transmeta fans start sending me hate mail!

Elephant Drive Review

I found this new service called Elephant Drive. With the advertising of unlimited online storage my ears perked up and I clicked the link. Apparently this new service is being offered by Amazon.com and is currently in the beta stages. According to the website, while Elephant Drive is in beta the service will be free but once it goes live there will be a fee involved for most of the accounts with the option to have a limited but free account. Since this service is currently free, lets take advantage of some free space and check this program out.

The Trunk

Once you sign up for your Elephant Drive you will need to download their client called the Elephant Desktop. With this program you will be able to access your “Trunk”. The Trunk is your online storage which comes out to a decent 5GB. Ideally this program was created to backup critical files on your computer and store them in a safe place however, you can use the service to store anything you desire. For this review I decided to store 3GB of photos and to see how easy it would be for me to access these files once they were uploaded.

Installation and Backup

Before you get all excited you should know that Elephant Drive requires the Dot Net 1.1 Framework so if you haven’t got that installed, you will need to download it. Once you have everything installed and in place you can go about configuring your backups. Since I knew what files I wanted to backup, I simply clicked Backup Options>Create Custom Backup>Select Folder. With the folder selection window open, I browsed for the specific Pictures folder and then hit “Save and Run”. Immediately Elephant Desktop began to encrypt and upload my files to my Trunk. From the main menu, I then clicked Reports and Activity>Current Activity>Upload Activity and I began to monitor my upload progress. The first thing I noticed was how random my upload speed was. The upload would range from 1.94KB/s to 116.97KB/s which meant uploading 3GB could take a very long time. I am not sure what was affecting my uploading performance but I can safely say it was dismal. I can only speculate that their servers were being loaded heavily which caused my uploading to spike so much.

Interface

Currently there are two interfaces available for you to browse your trunk. You can either use the Elephant Desktop that is accessed from the main menu by clicking Find Files and Folders>Browse your Trunk which then lets you view the various saved files by host computer. The other interface is accessed by right clicking the Elephant Drive icon in your system tray and selecting the Trunk Explorer. The Trunk Explorer features a click-and-drag interface which is much easier to use than the double click interface within the original desktop interface. I found second interface to be the easiest of the two becaus it mimics the Windows XP GUI and makes using it seem very natural.

Features

For being a simple program there are a decent amount of useful features. You can schedule Elephant Drive to perform a daily, weekly, or monthly backup. To increase your security you can choose to run two types of encryption using either something called Elephant or Personal Keys. I have not been able to tell a difference between these two keys, CPU utilization stays at 0% and memory consumption hovers between 43MB and 44MB. Restoring your files can be very easy, simply clicking two buttons and the files will be restored to the original folder. I don’t know if it will create the folder if it no longer exists, but once my upload has finished I will move the files and try to restore them.
Conclusion

If I had this service when my operating system died on me last week I might have recovered all the work I lost. If Elephant Drive maintains a free service with limited storage totaling 5GB or so then I will definitely keep using this program to backup my most sensitive material and current work. If you are in a field where you need some form of redundancy this could be the perfect service if you don’t need to backup your work every day. Once I buy a MacBook I will try installing Elephant Drive on Windows XP and see if I can use Elephant Drive to transfer files between computers. If this is possible, it might be a great program to synchronize multiple computers with the same documents. Elephant Drive offers a great service and with no current fee I would have to recommend everyone to check it out.

AMD vs. Intel: 64-bit Windows Dual-Core Shootout

When it looked like AMD was going to render Intel's multibillion dollar IA64 effort (aka Itanium) irrelevant with its brassy push into 64-bit computing using an extended x86 architecture, Intel responded with EM64T. When it was first revealed that Intel had an x86-64 project in the works, codenamed Yamhill, the company at first denied the project's existence. Eventually, though, EM64T surfaced, and it proved to be a near-clone of AMD's x86-64. There are some subtle differences in calling conventions between the two processors, but the differences are slight enough that compatibility isn't usually a worry.

Last week in Part I, we took a look at the AMD dual-core Athlon 64 X2 4800's performance on 64-bit Windows. As it turned out, Windows XP Pro X64 ran most 32-bit applications just fine on the X2 4800, and 64-bit code showed a few modest performance gains.

Our article generated considerable interest in the community at large. We received several interesting emails on the topic. One of the most salient was from Joe Landman of Scalable Informatics. Scalable ran a variety of 32-bit-vs-64-bit tests on Opteron CPUs. Although somewhat synthetic, the tasks run were applicable to certain types of scientific computing. SI found that 64-bit code was almost always faster than 32-bit code, when properly written.

David Wren of Passmark Software, an Australian utility software company, echoed those findings, and allowed us to use Passmark's Performance Test, which is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. PPT is synthetic in nature, but can yield interesting results that point to potential theoretical gains with 64-bit code.

Given Intel's renewed focus on both 64-bit x86, coupled with its rapid, if somewhat improvisational, push into dual-core processing, we wanted to see just how well Intel's dual-core processors fared with 64-bit Windows relative to AMD's best. So we loaded up a system with an Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 840 and took it for a spin. Intel is nothing if not a fierce competitor, so let's see how the dust settles.

A unique national competition asked college engineering students to help build America’s cities 100 years from now

Three of the nation’s leading engineering colleges are celebrating their winning entries in IBM and The History Channel® nationwide competition called The City of the Future: A Design and Engineering Challenge. IBM and The History Channel®, in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), challenged engineering students to peer into the future and propose the innovative engineering solutions that will sustain our great cities far in the 22nd century. It marked the second phase of a competition that earlier asked the nation’s architects to design “The City of The Future,” inspired by past civilizations revealed in The History Channel series, Engineering an Empire.

The winner in the New York metro area was New Jersey’s Science & Technology University whose team included Latha Singanamalli, Kiratbir Khurana, Arwa Gheith, and team captain Gian Francisco. In Los Angeles, California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo fielded a winning team with team captain Derek Benedict, Karen Nishimoto, Anthony Henderson, and Christopher Pratt. In the Chicago region, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign had Team Captain Peter Pascua, Sean Poust, Cam Talishi, and Chistiana Barnas submit the winning effort.

In his dorm, he started to custom-build and sell computers. Dell’s computer business actually was so successful that at the age of 19 he dropped out of college to run the business full-time. For not having a college degree, Dell did okay - his current net worth of $15.5 billion made him the 9th richest man in the United States.

Before he was a famous fashion designer, Ralph Lauren grew up in the Bronx and worked after school to earn money to buy stylish suits (he was trendy, even at a young age!) Some started out as correspondence schools advertised on the backs of matchbooks.But with time degree mills evolved, they found new ways to advertise.The next step was beautiful adverts in newspapers, magazines and flashy television commercials.Diploma mills have become more prosperous because modern technology is becoming increasingly available to the general public, home copiers and printers can produce professional-looking degrees and documentation, operators vigorously advertise their programs, and the Internet has made it easy to recruit "students".Since this "business" moved online the diploma mill industry has been able to generate hundreds of millions of dollars.

So What are Diploma Mills or Degree Mills ?

Diploma mill: An institution of higher education operating without supervision of a state or professional agency and granting diplomas which are either fraudulent.Diploma mills are universities who sell pieces of paper called diplomas that are worthless. The degrees mean nothing. Many diploma mills will simply hand you a diploma in exchange for a sum of money without ever asking you to do any work. A few will require an essay. These fraudulent institutions are notorious for scamming people by sending them convincing brochures filled with fake statistics and pictures. In actuality, most diploma mills are no more than some con-artist running a scam out of the computer of his one bedroom apartment. A few may even have a day job.

Degrees and certificates obtained from a "Diploma Mill" are frequently not recognized by other schools or by potential employers, all these because they don't have accreditation.Accreditation is an important factor in the public perception and actual legitimacy of a higher education institution. This process, quite simply, is a validation that a school's faculty, curriculum, and supporting facilities are worthy of awarding diplomas in certain areas of study.Legitimate distance-learning providers are recognized in the countries where they are located, and their status can be verified by contacting the relevant educational authorities.

How this "business" works ?

First the scammer choose a name to sound confusingly similar to those of prestigious, accredited academic institutions. The second step is to purchase a domain.In these days anybody can buy a domain and pay someone to make a beautiful website.The Internet is a great way for diploma mills to reach potential customers all around the world, because it’s cheap and anonymous. They can open up shop virtually anywhere. People are attracted by promises of the improved job prospects that an academic degree can offer, as well as increased social standing and prestige.Now that the only thing they need is accreditation, that is resolved with a simple trick.The trick here is that are indeed "accredited" but by unrecognized official-sounding agencies bogus accrediting agencies that they themselves have created.This way they can advertise as being "nationally accredited" or "accredited worldwide."

Now that everything is "Ok" they begin to find clients.And what is the best way to find clients ?

Advertising !!!

The mills use photographs of other buildings in advertisements. Most have P.O. Boxes or "Suite" mailing addresses. They advertise low fees, large degrees, little effort, complete facilities, accredited faculty, and the authority to grant degrees. Tuition is almost nonexistent except for the "all-in-one" fee for the diploma.With these methods they make people more confuse, and finally some of them will pay for a false degree.There are online schools that will give anyone who can pay the tuition a diploma without teaching the information needed to survive in the job market.Some may even advertise services for transcript notation and diploma verification in order to seem more legitimate.

A whole range of different diplomas and degrees are offered through the Internet. The vast majority of them follow the Anglo-Saxon model, with names like Bachelor of Arts/Science, Master of Arts/Science, and PhD, but there is almost no limit to what you can order as long as you’re willing to pay for it. You simply choose whatever diploma, degree or title you want, decide whether you want a transcript included, what level of distinction you want (e.g. cum laude), then you make the payment, and the documents are delivered only a few days later.

It is difficult to prove fraud. These operations immunize themselves from prosecution is by constantly acknowledging that they are diploma mills. These organizations do not obtain money under false pretenses by misleading "students" about what they are getting. The buyer knows they had done no real work. Often they know they had purchased a fraudulent product. The school usually admits up front that they are unaccredited. They give you everything promised.And all these are possible because in many states the law about degree mills is not clear.

Why Degree Mills Work ?

The people buying these degrees are buying them for a purpose, either to get a promotion, change jobs, or to change careers. In many cases, they knowingly purchased the product, even though it was bogus. Buyers who utilize these degrees fall into two categories: Uninformed people who think the degrees came from legitimate sources, or people who knowingly and explicitly purchase fraudulent degrees. They may do so for more recognition or fame, pay increases, job promotions, and personal gain. Those who are uninformed and later discover the degrees are fraudulent are usually too embarrassed at their mistake to go public. Often, those who buy diplomas read about them in newspapers or magazines, or search for them on the Internet.

Degree mills thrive primarily because

Holders of the fraudulent diplomas are ashamed of their mistake and don’t complain or are scared of being exposed.
Word spreads quickly because of the cheap prices of degrees.
Laws are too lax in some states.
If legal pressure is applied, degree mill operators move to other states with less strict laws.
The prestige of American degrees are bait for foreigners.
Mills are ignored by responsible accreditation agencies, government, and reputable institutions of higher learning.
Media and law enforcement are disinterested in mills because there is no legislation specifically pertaining to mill operations.

How you can recognize a "Diploma Mill" ?

These are the most common characteristics of a Diploma Mill.If you spot any of this signs you should investigate if this is a real school or just another Diploma Mill that want to fool you and take your money.

Introduction to Singapore

I could spend a lifetime exploring Singapore. I'm in awe of the cultural mysteries and exotic beauty of the city's old mosques and temples. As I pass the facades of buildings that mark history, I get nostalgic for old tales of colonial romance. Towering overhead, present-day Singapore glistens with the wealth of modern miracles. And when I smell incense, spice, and jasmine swirling in wet tropical breezes, I can close my eyes and know exactly where I am.
The longer I stay in Singapore, new curiosities present themselves to me. Singapore thrives on a history that has absorbed a multitude of foreign elements over almost 2 centuries, melding them into a unique modern national identity. Beginning with the landing of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, add to the mix the original Malay inhabitants, immigrating waves of Chinese traders and workers, Indian businessmen and laborers, Arab merchants, British colonials, European adventure-seekers, and an assortment of Southeast Asian settlers -- this tiny island rose from the ingenuity of those who worked and lived together here. Today, all recognize each group's importance to the heritage of the land, each adding unique contributions to a culture and identity we know as Singaporean.

I'll confess, many travelers complain to me about how westernized Singapore is. For many, a vacation in Asia should be filled with culture shock, unfamiliar traditions, and curious adventures. Today's travel philosophy seems to be that the more underdeveloped and obscure a country is, the more "authentic" the experience will be. But poor Singapore -- all those lovely opium-stained coolies and toothless rickshaw pullers are now driving BMWs and exchanging cellular phone numbers. How could anyone possibly find this place so fascinating?
With all its shopping malls, fast-food outlets, imported fashion, and steel skyscrapers, Singapore could look like any other contemporary city you've ever visited -- but to peel through the layers is to understand that life here is far more complex. While the outer layers are startlingly Western, just underneath lies a curious area where East blends with West in language, cuisine, attitude, and style. At the core, you'll find a sensibility rooted in the cultural heritage of values, religion, superstition, and memory. In Singapore, nothing is ever as it appears to be.
For me this is where the fascination begins. I detect so many things familiar in this city, only to discover how these imported ideas have been altered to fit the local identity. Like the Singaporean shophouse -- a jumble of colonial architectural mandates, European tastes, Chinese superstitions, and Malay finery. Or "Singlish," the unofficial local tongue, which combines English language with Chinese grammar, common Malay phrases, and Hokkien slang to form a patois unique to this part of the world. This transformation of cultures has been going on for almost 2 centuries. So, in a sense, Singapore is no different today than it was 100 years ago. And in this I find my "authentic" travel experience.

When the urban jungle gets me crazy, I escape to Malaysia. Even Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, seems relaxed in comparison to Singapore. In fact, many Singaporeans look to their northern neighbor for the perfect vacation, taking advantage of its pristine national forests and marine parks, relaxing on picture-perfect beaches in sophisticated resorts, taking in culture in its small towns, shopping for inexpensive handicrafts, or eating some of the richest food in Southeast Asia. Malaysia offers something for everyone -- history, culture, adventure, romance, mystery, nature, and relaxation -- without the glaring buzz of an overdeveloped tourism industry. It almost makes me overjoyed that few tourists venture here.
My favorite part of Malaysia, however, is the warmth of its people. I have yet to travel in this country without collecting remarkable tales of hospitality, openness, and generosity. I've found the Malaysian people to be genuine in their approach to foreign visitors, another fine byproduct of the underdeveloped tourism industry. For those who want to find a nice little corner of paradise, Malaysia could be your answer.

I've crept down alleys, wandered the streets of cities and towns, combed beaches, and trekked jungles to seek out the most exciting things that Singapore and Malaysia have to offer. In this volume I've presented the sights and attractions of these countries with insight into historical, cultural, and modern significance to bring you a complete appreciation of all you are about to experience. I've peeked in every shop door, chatting up the local characters inside. I've eaten local food until I can't move. I've stayed out all night. I've done it all and written about it here. I can only hope you will love Singapore and Malaysia as much as I do.

The Attack of the Clone(ing Scientists)

I know..its too late in the day to discuss cloning, cos every one who has anything to say about it has said it. But, I just read this article a few days ago about increasing the interactions between aam junta and khaas scientists!

And I guess, these interactions must really really increase with the scientists involved in human cloning. Because it seems to me, that they are convinced that one of the key problems that humanity faces is that there are apparently just too few of us.

I am sure some bored scientist, looked around his lab, which must've looked empty to him, and he thought "Chal yaar, lets try and figure out how to make this place look more crowded!", and if the scientist was really as smart as we are made to beleive then who would know that music and free booze is the most effective way to make any place crowded.

From what I gather, cloning is basically a technology that allows us to have offsprings without the conventional means of reproduction, which is ironical, cos aam junta is trying to figure out ways of achieving just the opposite. Some one needs to go and tell these scientists, " Bhaiyya, aapne galat turn le liya, ap agle signal pe u-turn maar lijiye"

Or to better assess the possible commercial demand of cloning, lets try this simple exercise. Think of (A). Number of People in your life currently that you would want two of? (B). Number of people in your life that you cant even put up with one of? and (C). Number of people in your life that you would want none of?

I am guessing C would be leading the list.

Would cloning help us achieve that? I think not.

And for the small number of cases as response to (A),lets reconsider. Could two Mithun's posisble accompolish anything that one Mithun can not ?, Would the Total of double chins in two Bappi's be something that one Bappi can not achieve? Or as an Engineer would put it, is twice of infinity any less than infinity? I see the number of entries in A drop already.

What we really need is a scientist to help is solve the problem mentioned in (C). Any volunteers?
